Why does blogging (still) make sense?

At a time when short videos on TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts dominate, it might seem that classic blogging belongs to the past. Many people ask whether it still makes sense to write blogs when people scroll fast content and reading longer texts is not as much a matter of course as it once was. The answer is clear: yes, blogging still makes a lot of sense. A blog is a timeless format that lets you not only build a personal brand but share expertise, values, experiences and inspiration too. Social media, meanwhile, is excellent for fast interaction and building a community.

Through a blog you can:

  • reach your target group and gain long-term traffic through organic search,
  • build authority in your field, which matters above all for professionals, consultants and businesspeople,
  • turn a blog into a source of income, for instance through affiliate marketing, collaborations or your own products,
  • create a community that comes back for your valuable articles and views.

How to start blogging – step by step

1. Choose your blog's subject

The first and at the same time one of the most important steps when starting to blog is choosing a suitable subject. A blog's subject determines what you will write about, which audience you will reach and also how long you will keep blogging. Although at first sight it may seem you simply choose what you enjoy, the choice should be more strategic. You do not have to be an expert at once, but certain knowledge or personal experience is a great advantage. Thanks to it you will be able to bring valuable content others will appreciate. Besides that, writing will be more natural and less stressful for you.
Blogging makes sense when someone reads your content. So it matters to check whether there is interest in the given subject. You can find that out using simple SEO tools that will show you how often people search for particular terms or problems on the internet.

A tip for you:
Use tools such as Google Trends to check the audience's interest in your subject. The tool will help you grasp which keywords people search for, which areas demand is growing in and which subjects are already passé.

2. Choose the right platform for your blog

Once you have a clear idea of your blog's subject, the next logical step is choosing a suitable platform. That will decide how your blog works technically, how it will look, which features it will have available and how far you will be able to adapt it to your needs. There are several blogging platforms on the market. Each has its advantages and limits – and that is why it matters to choose the one that best matches your goals, technical skills and budget. If you mean business with blogging, we strongly recommend a combination of WordPress.org + your own domain + reliable hosting. Thanks to this combination you will have full control over everything you do on the blog, and that will pay you back many times over in future.

3. Write your first blog post

In this step comes the most important thing: the content itself. Your first article is a milestone. It is the moment when your idea takes concrete form and the blog starts to "live". It need not be perfect. What matters is starting. We recommend choosing something simple, personal and useful as the subject, which will let you introduce yourself to readers, indicate the blog's direction and at the same time bring value. Excellent first subjects are, for instance:

  • "My path to [your blog's subject]"

Such articles are undemanding to prepare and at the same time come across as human and authentic and make first contact with your future audience.

The basic structure of a first article

For an article to be clear and appealing to read, we recommend keeping to this proven structure:

The heading (H1): apt and SEO-optimised

Your main heading should clearly name the article's subject and ideally contain the keyword people search for.

The introduction (the opening paragraph)

In the introduction you have the first 5–10 seconds to catch the reader's attention.
Answer these questions:

  • Why does the given subject matter?
  • What led you to cover it?
  • What will the reader learn if they carry on?

The article's body (H2 and H3)

Divide the article's main part into sections. Ideally using H2 and H3 subheadings.
Every section should have one main idea, which you support with examples, experiences, figures or practical tips.

The conclusion + a call to action (CTA)

In the conclusion, repeat the article's main idea. Strengthen the reader's motivation and point them towards what they can do next.

Examples of CTAs:

  • "If the article inspired you, write in the comments what you plan your first blog post to be about."

Do not forget basic SEO optimisation

For your article to have a chance of catching not only the reader but search engines such as Google too, pay attention to these elements:

  • Headings and subheadings (H1–H3): let them contain keywords.
  • The meta description: a short summary of the article (around 150 characters) with the main term.
  • Internal links: connect the article with other (and future) articles on your blog.
  • Alt text on images: name every image and optimise it on the basis of the subject.
  • The article's URL: let it be concise and apt (e.g. yourblog.co.uk/why-i-blog).

4. Plan your blog's content in advance

Many bloggers start with enthusiasm but after a few articles lose motivation, inspiration or their overview. The reason is often not a lack of ideas but a missing strategy and planning. That is exactly why it matters to create a simple, clear editorial calendar right at the start, which will help you keep consistency, discipline and system. A content strategy is not only about what and when you publish; it is a way of thinking through subjects in advance, targeting the right keywords and planning calls to action (CTAs) that will naturally move your readers on.

How to create an editorial calendar for blogs

You need no special tools. Google Sheets, Excel or Trello are entirely enough. The main thing is that the calendar be simple, flexible and easy to update.

What should you plan?

  1. Article subjects – prepare at least 10 ideas in advance. That will help you overcome blocks and keep a regular publishing pace.
  2. The publication date – set a rhythm (e.g. once a week or every 2 weeks).
  3. Keywords – assign each subject a term people search for (e.g. using Ubersuggest, KWFinder or Google Trends).
  4. A call to action (CTA) – think through in advance what the reader should do after reading the article (e.g. comment, register, download something).
  5. The article's status – track which articles are at the idea stage, in progress, ready or published.

Plan at least 3 to 5 articles in advance. That way you will always have something to publish, even when inspiration temporarily deserts you or you have no time. This way you gain greater control over your content and at the same time avoid the stress of "having nothing to put out". Besides that you will be able to react better to seasonal subjects, trends or your readers' questions.

5. Promote your blog

A blog without readers is like a concert without an audience – you can have excellent content, but if no one knows about it, its potential stays unused. That is exactly why promoting a blog is a decisive step that separates passive writing from genuinely building a brand, a community and a readership.

The good news is that today you can promote a blog with a minimal budget too. The key is consistency, knowing your target audience and using the right channels. Below we state proven ways of starting a blog's traffic up from the very first articles:

Share articles on social media

Social media is an excellent place for spreading your articles, reaching acquaintances and building a new community. Start with the platforms where your target audience already is:

Do not forget to add a call to action (CTA) – for instance "Read the whole article on the blog" and put the link in your bio or directly in the post.

Join topical groups and communities

On Facebook, Reddit and discussion forums there are plenty of active groups devoted to various areas – from travel, health and marketing to parenting. Join them and:

  • React to questions and add valuable comments.
  • Share your articles only when they are relevant to the subject and the group's rules.
  • Do not try to "push" your blog forcefully – the best advertising is the honest value you bring.

Create your own newsletter

Email marketing is among the most effective ways of building a long-term relationship with readers. Even if you start with only a few emails, it is worth building the list from the start. Promoting a blog is not a one-off activity but an inseparable part of blogging. You can have exceptional content, but without the right distribution it will go unnoticed. Choose the channels that suit you best, test what works and build your audience gradually.

Blogging is a marathon, not a sprint. And remember: every new reader is a potential fan, customer or sharer of your content.
