Editorial calendar

An editorial calendar is a content plan used to schedule blog articles or other types of content. An editorial calendar improves coordination between members of a content team, gives a clear view of content production for particular months and so helps manage the content strategy better.

You can build an editorial calendar to suit yourself and put into it the information that matters to you in managing content. Calendars are usually built in Google Sheets, where you can colour-code individual columns or add filters.

They usually contain these fields:

  • the planned and actual publication date
  • type of article (refreshing existing content, creating completely new content)
  • status (whether the article is written, in preparation or approved)
  • the keyword and its search volume
  • the outline
  • a note for the copywriter or the content team member preparing the piece
  • and finally the URL of the published article and its position
