The marketing mix – 4P, 4C, 4E, 5P, 7P. Are you thinking, who is meant to make sense of that? And just as you are celebrating finally understanding the marketing mix, another letter of the alphabet appears and you are back where you started. And yet it is actually quite simple. In our article we will look at it together and put the marketing mix in order once and for all!

How the marketing mix is actually defined

The result of marketing activity is a mix of product characteristics and benefits, called the marketing mix. It is a set of marketing tools a company uses to reach the goals it wants. With the marketing mix you can influence how your customers perceive things and how they buy.

Why do we call it a mix? Because it is a thought-through combination of various elements that have to be aligned and balanced with each other for success to be achieved. These elements, known as the "P"s, include product, price, place, promotion, and in the extended model also people, processes and physical evidence.

How you set your marketing mix up determines your final success too. Ideally you should set the marketing mix up before you even start trading. It is therefore one of the first things you should think about. At the same time, though, do not forget to update and adjust it over time.

If you genuinely want to meet customers' needs, though, you have to listen to them and ensure the most suitable conditions for their buying journey. From this philosophy came the 4C model from the customer's point of view and 4E, which deals with customer satisfaction.

How to use the 4P marketing mix to grow your business

The basic tools of the marketing mix include product, price, place and promotion.

Over time further Ps were added to the basic marketing mix, which is why today we also speak of the extended marketing mix. We will talk about that at the end of the article, though. It matters to realise that the marketing mix is the foundation of every marketing strategy and therefore deserves special attention.

Product

The most significant tool of the marketing mix is the product, and it is not only a tangible but also an intangible product. A product need not be only a material thing — it may also be services, places, ideas or organisations. We use the term for everything able to satisfy consumers' needs and wants, or to create those needs.

Product covers design, features, packaging, brand and warranty.

Price

This is determining the product's value, that is the amount of money a consumer has to spend to obtain the product offered. For a business, setting the price is a key decision, since price is the only marketing mix tool that creates revenue.

Place

Another important part of the marketing mix is place, or distribution. You may have the previous parts of the mix perfectly tuned, but if you have not sorted out where you will sell the product and distribution is weak, you will not get far. This part is above all about making the product available to the customer, at the right time and at the right price.

Distribution contacts that ensure the product's movement from producer to final consumer matter too. Distribution involves a set of independent organisations that make the product available to consumers. We call them distribution or sales routes, or channels.

Promotion

This covers all the activity by which consumers are informed and encouraged to buy the product. The basic tools include advertising, sales promotion, public relations, personal selling and direct marketing. These tools fall into the communication mix.

Today, when almost every business is online, it pays to invest money and time in online marketing. Read what advantages online marketing can bring you. Popular forms of online advertising are, for instance, banners, email marketing, social media, search engine optimisation – SEO and blogs.

You will achieve an immediate effect with paid PPC advertising. With PPC – pay per click advertising, money leaves your pocket only when a user clicks the ad. We cover this form of paid advertising more deeply in the article: what PPC advertising is.

SEO services are also an excellent way of getting your company to the top places in Google search. Thanks to SEO specialists' conscientious work you gain organic traffic to your site. This method is somewhat slower, though — the results show only after some time, but they have a long-term effect.

Take your marketing to a higher level with 7P

Companies with fast-moving goods and services use the extended 7P marketing mix. Besides the basic marketing mix tools such as product, price, place and promotion, the extended mix contains further tools: people, physical evidence and processes.

People

Employees are your business's face and reflect how it works inside. Every interaction with a customer shapes their impression and affects their satisfaction.

For many customers, employees are an inseparable part of the product or service. That is why it is key to pay attention to the quality of the after-sales support and advice they give.

Process

This means the way the product is provided to customers, that is how the product will be delivered to, produced for or sold to customers. These are the rules and procedures for providing products and services.

They include, for instance, the terms for providing social services, handling municipal waste, enrolling a child in school or issuing a building permit.

Physical evidence

Physical evidence in the marketing mix relates to every tangible aspect the customer perceives when interacting with a company and its products or services. It is the environment in which the service is provided, the product's appearance, but also the brand's visual identity and other elements affecting the customer experience.

Physical evidence can strengthen trust, stir positive emotions and raise the likelihood of a purchase. That is why it matters to pay attention to details and create an environment in line with the brand's identity and customers' expectations.

The 4P vs. the 7P marketing mix: what is the difference

The 4P and 7P models differ in what they try to achieve. While 4P focuses on the basic aspects of product, price, distribution and promotion, 7P goes further and includes people, processes and physical evidence too.

The extended 7P model helps companies understand customers' needs and expectations better. Although 4P is sometimes considered outdated, it is still a useful tool for small businesses with "standard" products.

For companies specialising in services or unique products, the 7P model is more suitable. In these cases customer satisfaction is affected by the customer experience and the quality of after-sales support too.

The customer first: the 4C marketing mix

If we look at the marketing mix from the customer's side, we will be talking about 4C, that is:

  • Customer value: this means what added value the product has for the customer.
  • Cost to the customer: cost is key, since it plays an important part in whether the customer buys the product.
  • Convenience: the aim is to give the customer convenience, comfort and certain advantages.
  • Communication with the customer: a company should devote itself to the customer and listen to them, so that on the basis of their requirements it can sell the ideal product.

What can the marketing mix bring you?

The marketing mix is like a recipe for your product's or service's success. Properly mixed ingredients help you reach your goals and reach customers. What specifically can it bring you?

  • A better understanding of the market: by analysing 4P (product, price, distribution, promotion) or 7P (plus people, processes and physical evidence) you gain an overview of the market, the competition and customers' needs.
  • More effective strategies: the marketing mix helps you create targeted strategies that maximise the return on investment.
  • A stronger market position: thanks to a thought-through combination of marketing tools you build a strong brand and set yourself apart from the competition.
  • More satisfied customers: by focusing on the customer experience and every aspect affecting it you achieve higher customer satisfaction and loyalty.
  • Higher sales and profit: a properly set marketing mix leads to better sales results and higher profits.

Ultimately the marketing mix will help you run your business more effectively and achieve long-term success.
