Has it ever happened to you that your web application loads slowly but you have no idea why? The script looks fine, the server has no obvious problems… and yet the whole thing runs like a snail. The user clicks… and waits. Your admin panel takes an age to load. Cron jobs take more time than they should. Where should you look for the cause?

The solution often hides not in the database or the server's configuration but directly in the code – more precisely in its performance. It is exactly in these cases that profiling comes into play – a technique that will help you see your application's performance from an entirely different angle. In this article we will show you how PHP profiling helps uncover hidden bottlenecks and speed your application up.

What is PHP profiling?

PHP profiling is a technique that lets you track how your web application works in real time. It helps identify which functions and processes slow pages' loading down, needlessly burden the server or consume memory excessively.

Think of it as diagnosing a car engine – instead of guessing where the problem is, you get specific data. Profiling tracks several important things.

  • The execution time of functions
First of all it shows you how much time is spent in individual functions or parts of the code. Sometimes what looks like simple code at first sight can in the end take a lot of time, above all if it repeats several times or works with a large volume of data.
  • RAM usage.
If an application consumes too much memory, that can cause a slowdown or even a failure of the whole process. Profiling will help you find out which parts of the code are demanding on memory and where optimisation would be possible.
  • The complexity of loops and logic
One of profiling's greatest benefits is that it helps you uncover so-called "bottlenecks" in performance – that is, parts of the application that needlessly hold the whole process up. That can be a badly designed algorithm, a needlessly demanding calculation or a frequently repeated operation that could be solved more effectively.

The result of profiling is therefore an accurate map of what is happening in your application while it runs. On the basis of this data you can determine which part of the code deserves attention and improvement. Thanks to that you can speed your application up, lower the demands on the server and generally ensure the site runs more smoothly – which you will appreciate, but above all your users will.

Why does PHP profiling matter?

You may tell yourself – it runs, so why bother? Profiling has more advantages than it seems at first sight:

Speeding up the site's loading

A site's speed is today a key factor in SEO and in the user experience. Users are impatient and if your page takes too long to load, they leave. Profiling will help you uncover what specifically is slowing your site down so that you can fix it and speed it up.

Lowering hosting and server costs

Unoptimised code often consumes more power than necessary. The result is the need for a more powerful server or more expensive hosting. Thanks to profiling you can reduce the computing demands and lower your monthly costs.

Improving UX and users' satisfaction

Nobody likes slow pages. If your visitors wait longer than they are used to, you can lose their trust. A fast site comes across as more professional, more reliable and more trustworthy – and that applies equally to e-shops, company sites and tailor-made applications.

More effective development and planning

PHP profiling shows you where it makes sense to direct development effort. You know which parts of the code are problematic, what needs rewriting and what is fine. The result is fewer experiments and more results.

When to think about PHP profiling?

Profiling is not just a "last resort" tool for when something breaks. Quite the opposite – the sooner you use it, the more problems you can avoid. Here are the situations where it is worth adding to your process:

When developing a new application

If you are starting a new project, it is good to think about performance from the outset. Profiling will help you uncover inefficient spots during testing, before the application reaches users. Prevention is always cheaper than a fix.

When users complain about the site's speed

If you get complaints along the lines of "it takes ages to load" or "the application freezes", profiling will give you a specific answer to the question: why? You no longer have to just try things and guess – instead you will find out what exactly is causing the problem.

When optimising older code

If you have a project that has been working for years and you plan to improve or adjust it, it is the ideal time to look at it from a performance angle too. Old code often contains pointless things or inefficient solutions that can easily be identified and fixed thanks to profiling.

How does PHP profiling help in practice?

Imagine you have an application that generates PDF invoices. Lately, though, generating them has slowed down markedly. Through profiling you find that 80% of the time is spent in a function that parses the template. BINGO. You know where to optimise. Maybe the template is needlessly complicated, maybe you adjust it in every loop… the point is that you have a specific spot to focus on.

The typical areas where profiling uncovers a problem:

  • Inefficient loops and pointless function calls
  • Too frequent database queries
  • Demanding libraries that can be replaced with a lighter alternative
  • Memory-intensive processes

All that will markedly help you decide where to invest valuable development time. Instead of guessing what "might possibly" be worth optimising, you can decide on the basis of data. Profiling shows you where you get the biggest gain for the smallest effort.

The best tools for profiling PHP

Profiling does demand a certain amount of technical skill, but today there are plenty of tools that can ease it markedly. Some suit less technical users too, others are powerful helpers for advanced developers.

  • Code Profiler for WordPress
For simple WordPress sites there is, for instance, Code Profiler — a very simple tool you install as an ordinary WordPress plugin. It shows you which plugins and functions consume the most time. Excellent for fast analyses, even if you are not a developer..

For more advanced projects and developers there are several tools:

  • Xdebug
A robust tool that installs on the server and allows detailed profiling of a PHP application's performance. The profiling outputs can then be analysed in a development environment using tools such as PHPStorm or Webgrind. Besides that, Xdebug also supports stepping (debugging), which lets developers watch what is happening in the application step by step.
  • xhprof
A tool from Facebook offering very fast, simple profiling. It is less demanding to configure than Xdebug but still gives plenty of useful data.
  • SPX (Simple Profiler for PHP)
A light, undemanding tool requiring no complicated settings. Ideal for fast local performance analyses without needing cumbersome installations.

Profiling outputs can look unclear at first sight. Fortunately there are tools that will show them to you in a clear, visualised form:

  • QCacheGrind / KCacheGrind
Visualisation tools that show you where the most time is spent. Very useful when analysing complex applications.
  • PHPStorm, VS Code and other IDEs
Many modern development environments have support for showing profiling data directly in the editor, often with colour charts, shares of CPU time and interactive clicking between functions.

Profiling is not for amateurs, but…

… if you know the basics of PHP and are not afraid to dig around a little in the tools, profiling can open your eyes. In many cases profiling will quickly show you that the problem is not where you would look for it. It is an excellent tool for every developer or site administrator who wants to speed an application up, lower costs and improve UX

Profiling is not just a tool you pull out when things are bad. It is a way of preventing problems before they affect your users.

Start profiling. Give your PHP code the performance it deserves.
