Cyber Monday

Cyber Monday is a marketing and sales phenomenon marking the Monday after the American Thanksgiving holiday, when e-shops offer significant online discounts and promotions.

Cyber Monday arose as a digital alternative to Black Friday and focuses exclusively on online sales. It is a day when consumers buy mainly electronics, clothing, toys and various services over the internet. E-shops often step up their marketing activity on this day, sending emails, launching online campaigns and offering limited promotions or free delivery. Cyber Monday has since become a global phenomenon and many countries outside the USA have adopted the concept.

Advantages

  • Higher sales for e-shops: a huge influx of customers motivated by attractive discounts generates record revenue.
  • A boost for online marketing: aggressive marketing campaigns during this period significantly expand the customer base and build brand awareness.
  • Convenience for customers: shopping from the comfort of home removes the stress of physical queues and crowds in shopping centres.
  • Access to limited or exclusive offers: exclusive discounts create a sense of occasion and urgency that stimulates immediate buying decisions.

Disadvantages

  • Heavy competition between e-shops: the pressure to offer ever better deals in a crowded online space often erodes profit margins.
  • Risk of customer dissatisfaction: stock shortfalls and an overloaded logistics network can cause late deliveries, which leads to negative reviews.
  • Pressure on logistics and warehousing: sudden peaks in orders put extreme strain on supply chains and can cause them to collapse.
  • Impulse buying: the psychology of a discount and limited time can lead to purchases the customer later regrets, which lowers overall satisfaction.

Practical example

An electronics e-shop offers a 30% discount on laptops and free delivery during Cyber Monday. The customer can order the product comfortably from home, and the discount is valid only until midnight, which encourages a quick buying decision.
